Vlog #11: Greg Sterling – From Litigation Lawyer To Search Industry Expert

In episode #11 of the vlog series at the Search Engine Roundtable I interviewed Greg Sterling (@gsterling). Some of you might not know this, but I’ve worked closely with Greg for over 13 years. First while at Search Engine Watch and now at Search Engine Land – we both worked under Danny Sullivan at both publications writing about what we love, search. In fact, we both were awarded, together, Search Engine Land’s Outstanding Community Service.

In any event – I am a huge fan of Greg Sterling. He is incredibly smart, patient, and has a really nice sense of humor. You might pick up on it during our interview, if not – then some things that he and I say in the interview might sound weird – it is humor, not weird.

I talked to Greg about his work history, how he started as a litigation lawyer and after about 9 years of doing that, he decided he had enough. He then kind of stumbled into writing about search engines and then local search. In fact, he wrote a white paper in the super early 2000s on how search engines may destroy the yellow pages industry. Then we talked about writing at Search Engine Watch and now at Search Engine Land, we talked about Danny, of course. We also discussed the local search industry as a market. We touched on some fun topics in search and ended it off for what Greg is looking for next.

I really admire Greg and I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed conducting it.
