Gianluca Fiorelli – The Search Community Honors You

Gianluca Fiorelli

This is part of the say something nice about an SEO/SEM series – feel free to nominate someone over here.

Gianluca Fiorelli is currently 48 years old and lives in Valencia, Spain for the past 14 years. He was born in Milan, lived a while in Rome – so he gets around. He is married to his wife Isabel, who he says is the reason he moved to Spain and they have two kids, Quique and Luca.

Gianluca originally started working in the TV industry and then in 2003 he “reinvented himself” to take the SEO route. His wife was incredibly supportive of those efforts and it has paid off. Gianluca is a name that most of those in the industry recognize and he brings a smile to everyone’s faces in our space. Even if you never met him, Gianluca, even across the internet has probably helped you in one way or another.

He has so many footprints in the SEO community, from a Moz Associate to a blogger at State of Digital, to being the founder of The Inbounder. His personal blog, his posts on Twitter, Facebook, in SEO community forums and more – he is all over the place. He speaks around the globe as well and contributes to many industry publications.

I can go on an on about Gianluca but let me share this anonymous submission from someone else who was honored here about Gianluca:

I don’t know how Gianluca haven’t gotten yet one of those big thank you’s in this case because of the massive effort he does organizing The Inbounder -which has now become one of the “to go” international conferences- and being one of the most friendly and willing to help SEOs you can find online.

Gianluca Fiorelli Bio: Born in the year Neil Armstrong put his feet on the Moon, Gianluca spent more than 10 years working in the Italian television industry before that unpredictable events obliged him to professionally reinvent himself in 2003. TV lost a promising Movie Channel Director by SEO earn an enthusiastic member. Since then Gianluca never stopped learning something new about how the search engine works and people search answers on the Internet.

Independent SEO strategist and International SEO consultant, Gianluca has worked with clients from almost every corner of the world, is a Global Associate of Moz, writes for Stateofdigital.com and founded the digital conference The Inbounder.

Favorite thing about the SEM community? Openness and generosity.

I think these are the two main qualities of the SEO community.

Openness in sharing discoveries, experiments, successes, and failures. As someone, who wasn’t an SEO since I started working, I can say this is not a quality you can find in other industries.

And generosity, which is not only related to sharing professional knowledge but also in a more personal and human facet: when you’re in trouble you know that you can share your pains with the community and that it will solidarize with you and do everything for helping you.

One piece of advice to the SEOs out there? Never forget the basics of SEO.

We are experiencing the (very fast) evolution of Google, especially during the last few years, but classics like Information Architecture, good keyword research, and indexability/crawlability are still foundational tasks in SEO.

Learn very well them before being tempted by fascinating but not yet so prioritarian facet of SEO like, for instance, voice search.

Then… I’d love SEOs if SEOs wouldn’t spend too much time overthinking and acting like scientists in the in the ivory tower of Alexandria discussing the sex of the angels. If you have a theory, then test it, see the results and then discuss; do not the contrary.

Favorite things in general? My favorite color is deep blue, and the food I prefer… well, I am Italian, my favorite dish is pasta with practically every kind of sauce. But if I have to choose one, then I say bucatini alla matriciana.

Finally, things I like to do are spending time with my 9 and 11 y/o kids, reading historical novels and essays, going to the movies (I graduated in film history) and painting miniatures.

What you want to be known for in the SEO space? I’d like to be known for being someone ready to help the other members of our community, ready to discuss ideas. As someone interesting for being able to curate the best information about SEO and Digital and discover people and help them being noticed. This, among other things, is also one of the main reasons why I founded The Inbounder.

You can learn more about Gianluca at his personal site, follow him on Twitter or connect with him on LinkedIn.
