Earlier this month, we reported that there was an issue with the URL submission tool in Bing Webmaster Tools where URLs that you would submit would not show up in the Bing index for weeks later. At SMX East, Bing confirmed the issue and said it was fixed.
The transparency from Bing on stage was pretty impressive. As I explained at Search Engine Land, Frederic Dubut from Bing said that when they shut down the anonymous URL submission tool – they did not anticipate that all those spam submission would end up within Bing Webmaster Tools. They didn’t think spammers would use an authenticated tool to submit spam, but they did.
So they ended up with a huge backlog of URLs to process and it caused many submissions to be delayed. Bing caught up with the backlog and now all is fine.
To help reduce this from happening, in the upcoming weeks, Bing will add limits to the number of URLs you can submit via Bing Webmaster Tools each day or week. They did not specify the rate limits or when it will go into affect, but it is coming.
