Today on Google’s home page is a special typewriter looking Doodle, special Google logo, for the Jewish German-Swedish poet and playwright Nelly Sachs’ 127th birthday. She was born on December 10, 1891 in Berlin, Germany.
She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966. She also lived through the rise of the Nazis in Europe during World War II. She fled to Sweden in 1940 on the last flight from Nazi Germany to Sweden, a week before Sachs was scheduled to report to a concentration camp. Her family became Swedish citizens in 1952.
Some of her most well-known works include Eli: Ein Mysterienspiel vom Leiden Israels (1950); other works include the poems “Zeichen im Sand” (1962), “Verzauberung” (1970), and the collections of poetry In den Wohnungen des Todes (1947), Flucht und Verwandlung (1959), Fahrt ins Staublose (1961), and Suche nach Lebenden (1971).
She passed at the age of 78 on May 12, 1970 in Stockholm, Sweden.
