Today on the Google home page in the United States is a special logo, aka Doodle, for Bessie Coleman. Bessie Coleman was the first female pilot of African American descent and was also the first African American woman to hold a pilot license. You can see her face, in those flight goggles floating through the air, doing spins and twirls like a pro.
She was born on January 26, 1892 in Atlanta, Texas and passed at the young age of 34 on April 30, 1926 in Jacksonville, Florida. She died from a flight accident due to problems with the plane. Today would be her 125th birthday.
Google wrote:
Although Coleman didn’t live to fulfill her ultimate dream of starting an aviation school to train people of color, she inspired a generation. As Lieutenant William J. Powell writes, “Because of Bessie Coleman, we have overcome that which was worse than racial barriers. We have overcome the barriers within ourselves and dared to dream.”
Very inspirational Doodle!
