Daily Search Forum Recap: May 28, 2019

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

• Google To Index New Web Sites Using Mobile-First Indexing By Default
  Google announced this morning that starting on July 1, 2019 they will begin to index new web sites, not yet discovered by Google, using mobile-first indexing by default. Old web sites not yet in mobile-first indexing still won’t be switched until they are ready but brand new sites, not yet indexed by Google, will come right out of the gate as using mobile-first indexing.
• Google Already Penalizing Favicons In Search
  Google has launched their new mobile search design that shows favicons in the search snippets. Some folks started to take advantage of that intentionally while others just had favicons against Google’s favicon webmaster guidelines. Yesterday Google began penalizing sites with favicons that were against Google’s guidelines.
• Google Local Pack Ad Label Feels Even More Subtle
  So with the new Google mobile design and the favicons and this ad label, the local pack has also adopted it. It looks even more subtle and more like the organic results than ever before. Yes, while the main listings have this ad label, at least the organic results may have brighter favicons to differentiate them. But this local listings don’t.
• Google Disavow Tool Not Going Away – Just Use The Old Version For Now
  There has been some rumors floating around that Google is not going to migrate the disavow tool from the old Google Search Console to the new one. John Mueller from Google hinted that is not the case and for now people can still use the disavow tool in the old version of the Google Search Console.
• Google Mobile Search Video Box Shows Large & Small Video Thumbnails
  Google is now showing a video box in the mobile search results that highlights a large video at the top with two smaller video thumbnails below that video. On desktop, you get just the three videos lined up and the same size but on mobile – Google is giving one more prominence.
• Google Noogler Notebooks
  When you become a Noogler, a new Googler, you get this classic black and white notebook with your name on it. This way during orientation week, I guess you can take notes using pen and paper. How old
