Search Buzz Video Recap: Google Search & Local Updates, New Bing Webmaster Tools, EAT, BBB, Maps Spam & More

This week I did the recap video from the United lounge in San Francisco airport. So I prerecorded it and scheduled it to go live Friday morning because I want to get this video out early and I don’t land until around 7am Friday. In this video I covered a small Google organic search update that was not confirmed by Google. I also covered a Google local search update that happened last Friday through Monday. Bing announced a new Bing Webmaster Tools, I have tons of screen shots. Google said it does not look for EAT signals, it doesn’t work that way. Google also said again, it does not use BBB ratings in its ranking algorithm. 429 and 503 HTTP status codes do slow Googlebot’s crawl but if left long enough, it can result in the pages being removed from Google’s index. Google said they process link disavows immediately but those are not taken into account until the URL is recrawled. Google is testing massive images in the search results. Google Search Console’s change of address tool added redirect validation and banner reminders. Google My Business is saying again keywords in descriptions can potentially impact local rankings. Google Posts now allows up to ten images or videos in a single Post. You can remove those Postmates links in your Google local panel. Google Maps said it removed 4 million fake businesses and 75 million local reviews in 2019 for spam reasons. Google Ads enabled audience sharing across manager accounts. Google tried to clarify the new Partner Program changes but SEMs are still not happy. Google AdSense publishers are getting more ransom emails. Danny Sullivan from Google shared how he reports search issues internally. I posted two vlogs this week, one with Rhea Drysdale and the other with Chris Boggs. Oh and if you want to help sponsor those vlogs, go to patreon.com/barryschwartz. That was the search news this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.

Soapbox: Hyper-personalization is a value exchange for millennials

Brands today are clamoring to develop personalized experiences, customized products and individualized recommendations. And rightly so. Consumers are prepared to trade off a valuable asset in exchange for their personal information. In particular, millennials are significantly more likely than prior generations to provide brands with their personal data in exchange for convenient, customized and timely treatment.

According to recent internal research, which found that more than half of millennials are willing to have their facial details and fingerprints on file with retailers if it means: a more convenient experience (55 percent), customized products and services (55 percent), or real-time promotions (52 percent).

The openness to sharing such sensitive information speaks volumes about the desirability of personalization, but it is not to be taken for granted.

Brands must deeply understand how their actions can build – or destroy – trust among their customers. Like any interpersonal relationship, years of positive actions can be neutralized by one critical misstep.

Beyond this, these findings emphasize the need for retailers to co-create authentic ways of delivering personalization to their customers, be it in terms of products, services, experiences or promotions.

Ultimately, this data speaks to consumers’ hunger for a hyper-personalized approach to building a relationship with retailers and brands. And, it’s an incredibly powerful opportunity. But success or failure hinges on retailers developing a type of “fair value exchange” with consumers to ensure this opportunity translates into stronger loyalty, deeper engagement and meaningful growth.

Example Of How Google Communicates Search Issues Internally

We report issues to Google in many ways, but did you ever wonder how Google reports issues with search internally? Danny Sullivan from Google shared an example of how he documents the issue for internal reporting and posted the example on Twitter.

In the example Danny provided, he provided the full query that triggered the issue in brackets. He shared a link to the original report. He provided a screen shot of the search results page, and highlighted the issue in red outline. Then explained the issue with the search results.

Here it is:

click for full size

Why did Danny share this publicly? I have to assume for a couple reasons, maybe more. First, people like me are curious about the internal workings at Google. Second, this illustration helps those who report issues to Google understand what Google needs to communicate the issue internally. Too often you see complaints about Google search but the query isn’t shared or the snippet in question is not mentioned. Having the full picture of what Google needs to escalate the issue internally is useful.

Forum discussion at Twitter.

Google Local & Map Ads Purple Ad Label Again

Back in 2016 we reported that Google Maps ads can and do show a purple ad label next to the local listings that are ads. But that has changed over the years and now Google is once again testing the purple ad label in the local ads, even on desktop.

Brian Freiesleben shared this screen shot on Twitter:

Like I said, this was kind of official back in 2016. But now, I cannot replicate it. Of course, Google is doing tons of UI tests now, espesially after the favicon pullback.

Here is a bit more information:

Again, I cannot replicate this – can you?
