Google March 2019 Core Update Myth Busting From Google

I felt it was important to make sure you all read my article on Search Engine Land with statements from Google around the March 2019 core update that started on March 12th. In that article, Google responded do a number of questions we sent them and some questions they just saw lingering on the web, including from our speculation post.

(1) A Reversal of the August 1 core update? Google responded saying “We’re constantly improving our algorithms and build forward to improve.” I wrote a more detailed article on my thoughts on this being a reversal or not and I think not but it depends how you look at it and if your specific site saw a reversal.

(2) Penguin related? Nope, it is unrelated to Penguin Google said. Google wrote “This wasn’t a Penguin update, because we no longer have those, as we’ve said before. This was a core update, as we’ve explained. “

(3) The biggest update ever? No, not even close said Google. Google said “This was a noticeable update that we felt warranted confirming, in keeping with what we’ve said before. But it is far from being the biggest update Google has ever done. We’re not characterizing it beyond that.” Google is saying here, it was a noticeable update but by far not the biggest they’ve done at all.

Of course, if your site was hit by this, it sure feels big to you.

(4) Neural Matching specific? Nope, not in any way shape or form. Google said “Neural matching has been part of our core ranking system for over half-a-year. None of the core updates we have confirmed coincided with some new use of neural matching.”

(5) Many core updates. Google has been doing core updates well before they even confirmed all of them. Google only relatively recently (past year or two) started to confirm them as “core updates.” But As Danny told us, it has been going on for a while now:

3 Essential Excel Practices for Formatting

Sometimes I need to do a really simple task about 1,000 times. Although I’d love to say I have the bandwidth to pour over my accounts line-by-line, I simply don’t. Fortunately, I’ve crowdsourced some useful functions that help me maintain sanity and get things done quickly. I’ll share these processes with you and expand on where they’ve served me best.

If/Then for Logical Decision Making

This has come in handy for ad copy management. I have a massive account that has a lot of duplicate ads running and I’m working through to pause off the duplicates.

Here’s how it works

In this example, all we care about is that there are content duplicates. We’re not interested in the metrics (yet) of how one duplicate is doing compared to its doppelganger.

Step 1: Download ads that are eligible to run

Step 2: Add a column that you can concatenate your ads into

Concatenate Campaign, Ad Group, Headlines, Descriptions, and Final URLs. I often don’t include the paths as I’m more interested in the meat of the ad being redundant.

Step 3: Sort Concatenate column by ascending

  • This is insanely important for your formula to work!

Step 4: Add a Status column

Step 5: Apply the formula =IF(Concat Cell = Above Concat Cell,”Paused”,”Keep”

What’s this mean?

  • If the ad you chose matches the ad above it, pause that ad. If the ads don’t match, keep it.
  • If you’ve sorted your concats correctly, this will follow a logical succession and cover all of your ads. The first test is a control. You are guaranteed that your first ad’s concatenated cell does not match the column header “Concat”. You’ll know the test is working if it shoots back the “Keep” label.

Step 6: Check your work

  • Run through and make sure the new status labels make sense. Don’t blindly trust the machine!!

Step 7: Make an upload sheet

  • Google Ads Editor won’t recognize “Keep” as a status, so you’ll want to filter for your paused ads and put them in a separate upload sheet. You can also remove your concatenate column, as Editor will not recognize it.

Step 8: Label the duplicates you’ve just paused so you have a record of what happened.

I wait to apply this label once the updates have been made in Editor because I’ve often found that Editor will try to apply my upload as new ads if there is a label it doesn’t recognize.

You can apply this same logic for ad performance in general. Again, as long as you’ve sorted your columns first, you can apply the If/Then statement to quickly weed out and pause underperforming ads (If CTR < 3%, Pause, Keep). I find this test formula tremendously helpful for repetitive tasks and I hope it serves you well too!

Substitute

Formatting keywords can take forever and a day if you don’t use formulas. I particularly hate formatting broad match keywords because Excel is typically a total spaz about text vs. general formatting. Cue =SUBSTITUTE! Following this formula, I can quickly transform my keywords into the appropriate match type.

Step 1: Highlight your Keyword column and change your formatting from General to Text (for good measure)

Step 2: In an adjacent column enter =SUBSTITUTE(“+”&Keyword Cell,” “,” +”)

This formula seriously changed my life.

What’s happening?

  • Concatenate a plus sign to the beginning of my keyword, then substitute spaces for space plus

Step 3: Copy and Paste Special (as values) into your keyword column and move on with your life.

Concatenate to build Exact & Phrase Match keywords

Hey, you may have noticed that I love to concatenate things. Concats are essential for formatting Exact and Phrase Match keywords in your upload docs and you can set them up in seconds.

Step 1: In an adjacent column, insert a bracket header and a bracket closer individually

Step 2: Write out your concatenate formula using the “&” symbol (or try =CONCATENATE or =CONCAT)

Remember to anchor your bracket cells with $!

Step 3: Drag your formula down and Paste Special (values) the results over

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of different ways to skin a cat. These are just a few tools that help me pick up the pace in production work so I can get beautiful campaigns up and running. What types of Excel tricks do you use? Hit me up @ad_jennarator and @PPCHero to keep the conversation going!

Daily Search Forum Recap: November 4, 2019

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • New Google Search Console Speed Reports Rolling Out

Google is testing showing images in the local pack that you can scroll through. It is an image carousel in the local pack itself. Here are screen shots from Valentin Pletzer that he shared with me on Twitter.
  • Google: We Wont Use Fitbit Data For Search Ads
When Google announced it bought Fitbit last week, the company wrote in the blog post “Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads.” But no real mention about organic search, so I joked Google can use steps a person does in a day as a search ranking signal. TikTok’s new SDK enables video uploads from other apps, services

TikTok released its first-ever software-development kit (SDK) on Monday, which will allow users to upload video content to the TikTok platform through third-party apps.

Aptly titled the “Share to TikTok” SDK, it’s the first kit TikTok has introduced in its TikTok for Developers program. The SDK includes new tools to help third-party apps and developers integrate with TikTok, allowing users to simply “Share to TikTok” from the editing panel of their favorite apps.

Additionally, TikTok named Adobe Premiere Rush as an initial integration partner, giving users the ability to edit using Adobe’s rich features and share instantly to TikTok. Premiere Rush allows users to capture videos and edit content on any device using a range of tools and effects, such as speed changes, aspect ratio editing, advanced color and audio control, transitions, and more.

Why we should care

The SDK provides developers and third-party apps with the ability to diversify content channels based on the users’ preferences, which could help drive more accurate targeting and reach for brands on the platform which has more than 500 million users.

“By engaging with the TikTok SDK, third-party developers will not only provide a new channel for creators to share their creations, but also expand the reach of their own platform through specified partner hashtags,” the company wrote.

Additionally, the SDK could bring more engagement to the popular video-sharing platform with it’s streamlined, one-click posting experience.

More on the news

  • A part of the TikTok for Developers program, this feature aims to expand creative offerings for the TikTok community while enriching and content for users.
  • With the TikTok SDK, third-party developers can provide a new channel for creators to share their work while expanding the reach of their own platform.

Facebook rolls out new corporate logo that will appear with all of its brands

Facebook introduced a new corporate logo Monday that will soon appear across its products.

The plain all-caps logo has been “designed for clarity” to help differentiate the corporate entity from the social networking app, Facebook CMO Antonio Lucio said. Facebook the brand will still be indicated by its familiar blue and white lower-case “f” and “facebook”.

The corporate logo also will be added to Facebook-owned services and platforms, including Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Portal, and Calibra. Facebook first announced the branding plan in August.

Why we should care. While marketers understand the full breadth of Facebook’s portfolio, surveys indicate that many consumers do not know that Facebook owns Instagram or WhatsApp, for example. With Facebook’s less-than-sparkling reputation, it’s an interesting choice to make the connection clearer to consumers. The company isn’t shying away from its dominance, though, even with (or in spite of) mounting antitrust scrutiny.

As Facebook moves to enmesh the backends of its apps with encryption, it has also been building more options for advertisers to enable advertisers to reach users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger through the single Ads Manager hub.
