We’ve been hearing for a while that Google may be adding voice search filters to the Google Search Console reports. This would enable you to see how people discover your site using voice and Google Assistant, differently than they would by typing in search queries into Google. But did you know that when the Google Assistant reads a featured snippet, that is not counted in Search Console at all?
John Mueller of Google released a #AskGoogleWebmasters video last week and said Google Assistant answers are not currently recorded in Google Search Console. I don’t think I knew that. He said “It’s slightly different when you use Google Assistant to ask a question that’s answered through a snippet of text from the page. In cases like this we’ll send the URL of the page to the users mobile phone to make it easier for users to go to those pages. However this data well the impressions of snippets for those queries that currently isn’t logged in Search Console.”
Here is the video embed:
Not too long ago, John implied that voice search query data is not a priority for the Google Search Console team. So I wouldn’t expect this data any time soon.
Here is the transcript:
Asking about voice search in search console.
Well this question comes up from time to time.
It’s worth considering that there are multiple ways to do a so-called voice search. The way I most frequently use is essentially to use voice as a special kind of keyboard for a text search field. In that case when I’m doing a so-called voice query it’s actually just a normal web search that I enter with the voice keyboard. These queries are already logged in Search Console in the same way as all ther queries are logged. Just like you’d see queries that are entered by swiping on a mobile keyboard.
It’s slightly different when you use Google Assistant to ask a question that’s answered through a snippet of text from the page. In cases like this we’ll send the URL of the page to the users mobile phone to make it easier for users to go to those pages. However this data well the impressions of snippets for those queries that currently isn’t logged in Search Console.
As with other feature requests we regularly review these and try to prioritize those that bring the most value to websites to publishers, webmasters and SEOs. If there’s something you’re keen on seeing in Search Console make sure to submit feedback directly in the tool ideally give us a glimpse of what you’re trying to figure out and how it can help you to make a better website we’d love to hear from you.
