Google Search Supports TLS 1.1 & 1.2 With Upcoming PCI Compliance Requirements

On June 30, 2018, the PCI Council is suggesting that all web sites migrate from TLS 1.0 to TLS 1.1 or higher. In fact, if you have a payment gateway integrated with your web site, you have probably been getting these notices for years but the difference is now, it looks like June 30, 2018, that date, is going to stick and not be pushed off.

With that, websites are upgrading and although some really old legacy browsers won’t load if you are running TLS 1.1 or higher, it is a very small fraction of your web traffic.

But will Google have problems crawling, indexing and ranking web sites using TLS 1.1 or higher? The answer is no. John Mueller of Google said on Twitter that Google should be able to crawl it without an issue. In fact, we covered in 2015, that GoogleBot back then supported TLS 1.2 and most web sites are simply going from TLS 1.0 to TLS 1.1, not TLS 1.2.

Google even has been notifying webmasters via Search Console to upgrade.

What if you don’t upgrade? Well, you might lose your PCI compliance but it won’t impact your rankings Google says.
